Chip design company ARM, has developed a new operating system called mbed OS, that could play a large role in the development of the Internet of Things. This OS aims to provide a common software layer to secure and connect the wide array of devices expected to be networked together in the near future.
Mbed will be available for free next year, on ARM based chips. ARM has never developed an OS before and started developing mbed back in 2006. IBM and salesforce.com are also supporting this effort.
Mbed is an event driven OS that supports various connectivity methods for pushing data into the cloud. It supports Bluetooth, WiFi and several cellular standards. Mbed only uses 256k of memory, therefore can be installed on very small devices.
